Thanks for the comment, Jeffrey. If you have any info on local plans, please forward them on for our users. I think having a local plan is a great, convenient option for permanent expats. I would say, though, for those moving between the US and Ecuador, as many citizens do, it is a good idea to have plans for both locales. That's why I have decided to roll with this plan--flexibility.

I have been paying for international coverage for the last 5 years while living in Ecuador pretty much 11 months out of every year. This year, we are opting to switch to a locally based insurance, given the high cost of international insurance. I recently broke my leg and paid a total of $1,700 for treatment here, which is just a little more than my entire premium for the year. If you´re planning to stay put here, it just makes sense to check out local options!

sorry Sherry, I don't quite understand what you mean. You are looking for a place for your family? I don't think anyone would deny that if you are house hunting.

I think it is a rather mute point to reflect on the "control" of the media. Everything and everybody has been controlled by something or other from the dawn of time until everything ends. But look, somehow you found out the real story of what went down, right? Why? Because of the free press. It does exist! There are so many independent media sites out there and with the internet you have it available at your fingertips, instantly! What worries me and should worry you and what is worrying everybody(even conservatives on capital hill) is the ability for government to stamp out a voice. Like SOPA which threatens to simply pull the plug on domains in the US, Correa now has the right to censure the media right now in Ecuador.

There will be always be a push in pull in any "democratic society." And as we speak the jackals are circling around us, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. But that is the push and pull of this life and nothing that can be avoided. But when one one branch of the government, especially the executive power with the power of police as it's left and right arms, has the ability to axe any voice, I get the shivers and instantly I hear bootsteps in Nuremberg rallying around me. While politicians and corporations have the ability to influence media, they don't have the right to simply crush out a news source based upon any law. Our constitution declares this and the founders believed a functioning free press was our cornerstone. No law, unless it were an amendment could change this. But Correa, using populist tactics manipulated the people through referendum to give him executive control over Ecuador's media like the good padron that he is. I know he has done much for the people, but can you not see the danger of such control like I can?

I am uncertain what free press means. In the USA an alleged free press is actually largely controlled by large corporations and it often or entirely ignores news in good investigative that does not support, or could be critical of the corporate mission and interests ..highly selective, definitely not free but professing to be so. For example, real investigative reporting of the civil wars in Central America in the 80s was largely missing would have been deemed anti American but should have exposed then president Reagan's support of the murders, rape and pillaging of populaions --the terrorism inflicted upon several countries as US policy was never revealed in the detail that a free media is obligated to do. Much of present Latin American news is missing..no news, no background. The colossal failure of the American press to investigate the Bush excuse to declare war on Iraq, the essence of what eventually proved to be non existent weapons of mass destruction, is the most spectacular example of failure, total collapse really, of corrupt, irresponsible, undeserving but self-proclaimed "free" press in a free country and above all, it is inexcuseable and very wrong. Some of what I see in Ecuador may not be right but that deserves good investigative reporting, not the banalities and childish musings I read above. I personally admire and support President Correra and have seen some of what he has tried to do in Ecuador and also his role in trying to help Latin America become independent. I feel that to dismiss his efforts with reference to Pinochet and Hitler is nknowing, undeserving and absurd and does miss the bigger picture.
