Cool off at the Frutabar – Fruit Juice and Smoothies in Guayaquil

On a hot day of wandering around Guayaquil, my favorite place to stop is Frutabar, which is a small cafe style restaurant with a light menu and tons of fresh juices. Of all the places I have been in Guayaquil, Frutabar has the widest selection by far when it comes to the number of fruit juices to choose from. You can also mix and match… the combinations are endless.

The menu features a number of light sandwiches, my favorite being the Hawaii Sandwich (Sanduche Hawayano) with chicken, pineapple and a delicious light dressing. Entrees cost $3–6.

If you are getting a sandwich then get a juice, but if you are just coming in here for an ice cold drink get Read more

Celebrate Simón Bolivar's Birthday in Guayaquil

If you are planning a trip to Ecuador this month (July) and mapping out your route now, try and aim to be in Guayaquil on the 24th and 25th.

July 24th is a nationwide holiday as the whole country celebrates the birthday of Simón Bolivar, the famous South American liberator. Things get even crazier on the 25th, however, as Guayaquil shuts down for two days with the biggest birthday bash combined with the celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the city.

Guayaquil is the most populous city in Ecuador, and the whole town turns out for the party. It is a celebration not to be missed if you are looking to have some wild fun.

Exciting Train Ride Down the Mountains

The Nariz del Diablo or the Devil’s Nose train ride is considered to be one of the world’s most spectacular train rides, and one of Ecuador’s highlights. The track zigzags down the mountainside passing providing fantastic views of the Andean Sierras.

A few things to keep in mind: Dress in layers. You will be cold at the start, but sweating by the bottom Read more

Down on the boardwalk…

While Guayaquil may not be first on your list of cities to visit in Ecuador, over the past years it has taken definitive steps for the better. What was once dirty and unsafe is now beautiful and secure, largely due to the development of the Malecon 2000.

The Malecon is comparable to a large boardwalk of sorts that starts in the Las Peñas neighborhood and runs along the Natural Guayas River. Designed by Oxford University in London, the Malecon is full of interesting pathways, parks, shops and restaurants. The design takes into account the geography of the area, playing off of its natural beauty.

The Malecon 2000 stretches for 2 miles, and is a great place Read more
