Uzhupud Hosteria – Just Outside of Cuenca
My friend Dixie from www.retire-in-ecuador.com recently visited Uzhupud Hosteria, which is about 40 minutes outside of Cuenca. I thought I would share her experience with you.
“Uzhupud means “Hot Chili Pepper Valley”. I visited Hosteria Uzhupud last week on a beautiful sunny Ecuadorian morning. Uzhupud is situated in Paute about a 40 minute drive out of Cuenca.
My first visit to Uzhupud was way back in February of 2008. My next visit was on a tour I did quite recently to Chordeleg. Now that I have lived in Cuenca for quite awhile I understand how much I enjoyed going out to Uzhupud for the 3rd time.
So why the name Hot Chili Pepper Valley. The name combines Read more
Textile Exhibit in Cuenca
Textiles are one of the most popular souvenirs for visitors to Ecuador. These traditional pieces of art are hand-woven throughout Ecuador and the rest of South America. Brightly colored fabrics are spun into intricate designs and made into ponchos, blankets, shawls, bags and other items. Currently in Cuenca there is a gree textiles exhibit happening at the CIDPA on Escalinatas at Calle Tres de Noviembre. Admission is free, and the event affords you the opportunity to see beautiful textiles from around North and South America.
Textiles have been around for centuries in Ecuador, the most popular weaving town being that of Otavalo, in the north of the country. Spaniard Rodrigo de Salazar set up a weaving

Associated Health Benefits of Living in Ecuador
While the United States and other developed countries may be able to boast of their state-of-the-art health care, top quality education, and massive amounts of technology, Ecuador is famous for something far more important: longevity.
It may seem strange that a country like Ecuador is famous for the longevity of its residents, but there are a few key aspects that contribute to its excellent reputation.
Geographic location is a factor that serves to benefit the country. Straddling the equator, Ecuador sees an even sunrise and sunset year round. The sun comes out at 6 am and sets at 6 pm 365 days a year. Although there are variations to the climate, it is generally moderate year round. This kind of Read more
New to Cuenca? Get the Dixie tour – highly recommended.
Dixie Davie, an Australian from Perth, and her husband have been in Cuenca for two years now – and loving every minute of it. Her site is Retire – in – Ecuador.
The Gringo and company had an opportunity to join her on her tour this past week – it was a very well spent $75. We learned a lot – both the positive and the negative about moving to Cuenca. It was mostly positive.
From her site, here is her description of her tour:
This tour is designed to show you a little of what it is like to live here and to find out where the best neighborhoods are, and where to do your grocery and other Read more
Hotel Carvallo in Cuenca – Probably better to pass if you like to sleep
The Gringo is in Cuenca this weekend and checking out Cuenca with Dixie Davey of Retire-in-Ecuador.com.
Tour was great and highly recommended. More information about Dixie here.
Now about Hotel Carvallo- it has a great location, right in the heart of downtown. It is a very nicely redone. Staff is great, very friendly and quite helpful. Price is ok at about $100 a night. The rooms are fine enough, but the beds are on the small side.
Here is the issue though – the building is like a big atrium with wooden floors, so be prepared to hear everything, and I mean everything! People roaming the hallway sound like they are right in the middle Read more
More Parks to Visit in Quito
In addition to Parque La Carolina there are 3 other major parks in Quito. They are: El Ejido, La Alameda and Parque Metropolitano.
El Ejido is located on Av. Patria west of Casa de la Cultura. It is one of the most traditional parks in the city and serves as a showcase for many local artists. A stroll through the park’s sidewalks affords you the opportunity to admire their work, which is set up for sale along the pathway. This park is also a popular place for street entertainers, such as the frozen man, comedians and other traveling theater groups. The shows can be quite entertaining and draw large crowds. You might also enjoy watching a competitive game of ecuavolei, Read more
