Want to stay active while in Ecuador? Why not teach English and get paid? Cambridge institute, the worlds most esteemed teacher training program, through Southern Cross teacher training centers has just opened up a new campus on the outskirts of Montanita, in the haven known as Kamala. Here Cambridge has teemed up with dive center to provide teachers in training with an all inclusive 5 week package including instruction, in-class, assessed teaching time. Also included for the price is room and board–your private bungalow by the beach and Ecuadorian style home cooked meals poolside.
Important for anybody looking to gain their CELTA qualification is not just the certificate, but the
overall experience associated with it’s acquisition. One great reason for teaching English abroad is being able to experience new cultures and have new adventures. The hosts at Kamala provide PADI courses from open water beginners all the way to dive masters. You can get your intro in Kamala’s swimming pool and then jump out into the local waters. Nearby Isla de la Plata,
provides excellent diving with crystal blue waters teeming with a huge abundance of fish and mammal life.
Montanita also happens to be the best place in Ecuador to learn to surf. Montanita boasts several highly rated surf schools which draw from some of Ecuador’s top professional surfers. The ge
ntle rolling beach breaks are a great place to get wet—and then once you have a bit more experience, you can step up to “la punta” one of the top waves in Ecuador.
On the weekend when you’ve had a week of intensive courses you can check out the wealth of local Ecuadorian and international dining in town and hit the clubs where top Ecuadorian and international Djs come to spin until the sun rises. Of course, you can always just lay on the beach, read a book
and sample some local ceviche.
What’s best about this program is that it gives back to the community by providing free classes to locals seeking beginner, intermediate and advanced classes. Even though Montanita is Ecuador’s m
ost popular seaside tourist destination, the majority of locals failed to have a working knowledge of English. While I think every traveler should have a grasp of the language where they’re traveling, many don’t. Thus, it’s of obvious benefit for a business to have an English speaker. Receptionists, tour guide, waiter, surf instructor, these jobs open up a business to a wider audience if their employees speak a bit of English as there are many tourists who simply are clueless to the Spanish language. By providing these classes free to the people, you can feel good at the end, knowing you’ve given something back to the people here in the pueblo.

i thought this course was offered in guayaquil….? is it actually taught in montanita? have u taken it? gracias

There is one I think in Guayaquil. Last I talked to the instructor, they were going to start one in Quito as well. But definitely one in Montanita. Check the website listed on the post and it will tell you details of course availability.
As for personal knowledge of the course, the answer is no, I haven’t taken it. Though I was living in Montanita during its inception and had close contact with all the students, instructors, and management. And I can tell you that Vicky, the instructor is highly qualified and the location is incredible. You have beach front classrooms and a lot of adventure activities to take part in while you study. The town of Montanita is a gem as well–one of the top attractions in Ecuador. Check it out!
These guys do like 7 or 9 residential CELTAs in Manglar Alto (near Montañita)a year. I’ve been told they are the top center in Latin America for teacher training. According to the webpage they also run courses in Quito.
I read some good reviews in http://www.teflcoursereview.com/courses/location/ecuador/.
Hey george,
thanks for the comment
yes, I think that this is the number. They just implemented the quito course this year, I believe. I believe there is one in Guayaquil also, the original course. I can say that they are a top course and the teacher is great. And you are taking classes a stones throw from the beach. If you would prefer a city to study in, I suggest Quito. There is more to do there and the climate is more healthy. Guayaquil is a stinky, sweaty place to live.
But with a Celta, you will be prepared and qualified to teach anywhere in the world at any facility. Teachers with a celta certificate are the most sought after.
